Adani Power, Cochin Shipyard and 4 Other Stocks in Focus After Getting Added to F&O Segment

Synopsis: Six stocks: Adani Power, Cochin Shipyard, Hyundai Motor India, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Nippon Life India Asset Management and Vishal Mega Mart will enter the F&O segment of the National Stock Exchange of India from April 1. Their inclusion signals stronger liquidity and market depth, enabling derivatives trading and potentially boosting participation from traders and institutional investors.

The National Stock Exchange of India has expanded its derivatives universe with the addition of six stocks to the futures and options segment, effective April 1st. This move enables derivatives trading in companies such as Adani Power, Cochin Shipyard, Hyundai Motor India, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Nippon Life India Asset Management, and Vishal Mega Mart, providing participants with fresh tools to hedge positions as well as leverage bets.

About the addition to the F&O segment

The National Stock Exchange of India has announced the addition of six stocks, namely Adani Power, Cochin Shipyard, Hyundai Motor India, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Nippon Life India Asset Management, and Vishal Mega Mart, to the Futures and Options segment, effective April 1. Market participants are now able to trade derivatives of the aforementioned stocks, providing investors with more opportunities to hedge as well as engage in speculative trading activities.

Being included in the Futures and Options segment of the National Stock Exchange of India indicates a company’s strong market capitalisation and liquidity, as well as trading volumes, which are some of the important criteria a company needs to fulfil in order to be included in this segment of the exchange.

With the addition of the aforementioned stocks, traders are now presented with the opportunity to hedge as well as leverage exposure to the aforementioned companies through derivatives, namely futures as well as options. For traders, derivatives are an important tool in managing risk, particularly during times of volatility in the financial markets.

Impact on Trading Activity

The entry of a stock into the F&O segment is known to increase the trading volume and attract more investors in the underlying stock. The presence of derivatives helps in price discovery as investors can respond to any news, announcements, and macro events using the cash and derivatives markets.

Though the entry into the F&O segment improves the liquidity of the stock, it has the disadvantage of increased short-term volatility in the stock prices. The derivatives segment allows investors to take large positions at a relatively lower capital cost. This leads to more volatility in the stock prices in the short term. However, in the longer term, the derivatives segment improves the overall efficiency of the markets.
