The Union Cabinet on 24th December approved a key part of the Delhi Metro Phase-V(A) expansion. They cleared a 2.3-km corridor between Aerocity and Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,419.6 crore.
Once completed, the Aerocity–Terminal 1 stretch is expected to improve access to the domestic terminal. It will also help ease road congestion around the airport.
This link is one of three corridors approved under the Rs 12,015-crore project. It will add around 16 km of new metro lines and 13 stations to Delhi’s rapid transit network over the next three years.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the expansion will take the Delhi Metro network beyond 400 km. It will strengthen connectivity across the city’s central, southern, and airport-linked areas.
The broader Phase-V(A) project is scheduled to be completed within three years. It will be funded by the Centre, the Delhi government, and international partners.
Construction will use tunnel boring machines and the earth pressure balance method to minimise surface disruption. It will also reduce traffic inconvenience. The government said the new corridors are expected to reduce road congestion, cut vehicular pollution, and lower dependence on fossil fuels. These improvements will enhance the overall ease of living in the national capital.
