Diamond League Final 2025: Neeraj Chopra Misses Gold as Julian Weber Wins With 91.57m

At the Diamond League Final 2025 in Zurich on Thursday, Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra of India secured second place as Germany’s Julian Weber claimed his first-ever trophy with a brilliant performance.

Weber’s winning throw of 91.57m was a personal and season’s best, leaving the rest of the field far behind. With a best effort of 85.01m, Chopra narrowly edged out Keshorn Walcott, whose throw of 84.95m placed him third.

Weber’s Dominant Show

Weber made a powerful start, recording 91.37m with his first attempt and then stretching it further to 91.57m. These career-best and season-best throws set the benchmark for the rest of the competition.

His winning mark was more than six metres clear of the rest, leaving no doubt about his dominance. This was Weber’s maiden Diamond League trophy, and also one of the longest throws recorded this season.

Chopra’s Battle for Silver

Neeraj Chopra, who has been a model of consistency over the years, faced a tough outing by his high standards. Out of his six attempts, only three were legal throws.

He started with 84.35m and remained behind for most of the event. On his final attempt, he pushed himself to 85.01m, which helped him edge past 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished third with 84.95m.

This was the third consecutive year that Chopra ended as the runner-up at the Diamond League Final, after also finishing second in 2023 (Eugene) and 2024 (Brussels).

Rivalry With Weber

The result added a new twist to the growing rivalry between Weber and Chopra. In 2025 alone, Weber now leads their head-to-head record 3-1, although Chopra still maintains a strong overall advantage of 15-5 since their first meeting in 2016.

Looking Ahead

Despite missing the top spot, Chopra remains India’s biggest hope in athletics. As the defending World Champion, he will next compete at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September 2025. Speaking after the event, Chopra admitted that he needs to improve his distances to stay at the top level, especially with the world championships around the corner.

Final Standings – Men’s Javelin, Zurich 2025

  1. Julian Weber (Germany) – 91.57m (Winner, maiden Diamond League title)
  2. Neeraj Chopra (India) – 85.01m (Second place, third straight runner-up finish)
  3. Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad & Tobago) – 84.95m (Third place)

Conclusion

This Diamond League Final proved to be a special moment for Julian Weber, while Neeraj Chopra will see it as a crucial test ahead of bigger challenges. For athletics fans, the growing Chopra-Weber rivalry promises even more excitement in the months to come.
