As Maharashtra looks to position itself as India’s next global technology gateway, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced plans for an ambitious ‘Innovation City’ near the Navi Mumbai Airport. The project is pitched as a future-ready innovation hub. It is expected to see an investment of around $11 billion from the Tata Group.
Unveiled on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit 2026 in Davos, the proposed Innovation City aims to serve as a plug-and-play ecosystem for global innovators. According to Fadnavis, the city will host multiple innovation and artificial intelligence (AI) hubs, along with a large data centre. This will create a platform for global companies and startups to operate and collaborate seamlessly.
Calling it a dream project for the state, the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office said the initiative would place Maharashtra at the centre of emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and Global Capability Centres (GCC). The government described the project as a responsible, world-class innovation ecosystem designed to strengthen the state’s long-term economic growth. At the same time, it will directly benefit its people.
Officials added that Innovation City is envisioned as a high-impact research and technology cluster, anchoring next-generation development and AI-led growth. This would position Maharashtra prominently on the global innovation map.
However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users welcomed it as a positive step towards future-focused development, others questioned the scale of the project. Some also flagged concerns over past smart city initiatives that remain incomplete. Critics argued that similar promises in the past failed to translate into visible outcomes. At the same time, supporters said even a small start could help set a new direction for the state’s innovation goals.
