Even backmarker teams today usually find a way to score at least once during a long season, thanks to expanded grids, safety cars, and unexpected race results. The struggles of HRT and Caterham remain a reminder of how tough Formula 1 can be for newcomers. 

4. Riccardo Patrese and Andrea de Cesaris – Most Retirements 

Reliability was a huge problem in past decades, and no one shows this better than Riccardo Patrese and Andrea de Cesaris. Both drivers retired from an astonishing 147 races during their careers. 

Cars breaking down, engines failing, or accidents cutting races short were common in their time. Modern Formula 1 is much more reliable, mechanical failures are rare, and cars often last an entire season. That makes this unwanted record almost certain to stand forever. 

3. Phil Hill – Champion With the Fewest Points 

When Phil Hill won the World Championship in 1961, he did it with just 34 career points. That remains the lowest total ever for a Formula 1 champion. 

The reason lies in how the sport worked at that time. Only a handful of races were held each season, and only the top finishers scored points. In contrast, today’s drivers compete in more than 20 races a year, with points available for the top 10 finishers and additional points in sprint races. A future champion winning with so few points is practically impossible. 

2. Nico Hülkenberg – Most Points Without a Win 

For years, Nico Hülkenberg held a bittersweet record: the most career points without a single race victory. He scored more than 600 points across his long career but never stood on the top step of the podium. 

This record highlighted his consistency and talent, but also his misfortune in never landing a race-winning car. With today’s points system rewarding even lower positions, it’s unlikely we’ll see another driver accumulate so many points without at least one win. 

1. Luigi Fagioli – The Oldest Race Winner

In 1951, Italian driver Luigi Fagioli won the French Grand Prix at the age of 53 years and 22 days. To this day, no other driver has come close to winning at such an age. 

Modern Formula 1 demands extreme fitness, sharp reflexes, and years of preparation, which is why most drivers peak in their late 20s or early 30s. Even legends like Fernando Alonso, who is still racing in his mid-40s, have not managed to claim victory at such an advanced age. Fagioli’s record looks untouchable in the modern era.
