India-Russia relations, a strategic partnership since 2000, remain robust amid global tensions. Bilateral trade hit $68.7 billion in FY 2024-25, driven by discounted Russian oil imports, with a $100 billion target by 2030. President Putin’s December 4-5, 2025, visit to New Delhi for the 23rd annual summit with PM Modi focuses on defence deals like additional S-400 systems and Su-57 fighters, alongside trade pacts and energy ties. Recent agreements include logistics support and labour mobility.
High-Level Talks
The Nifty Defence rose 0.41% to 7,841.65 as markets reacted positively to the visit of Vladimir Putin to India for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit, hosted at the invitation of Narendra Modi. Expectations of fresh defence cooperation lifted investor sentiment.
This is Putin’s first visit to New Delhi in four years, and he is accompanied by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, along with a large business and industry delegation. Analysts believe this high-level engagement could pave the way for new defence agreements and technology collaborations.
Indigenous Manufacturing Boost
Vladimir Putin’s two-day visit to India signals a renewed push in defence cooperation, according to Pranay Aggarwal, CEO of Stoxkart. With top defence officials and arms exporters in the delegation, expectations are rising around talks on air defence expansion, advanced missile systems, stealth fighter procurement, and a new shared military logistics framework.
Further, the ongoing summit is expected to speed up India’s defence and aviation procurements from Russia in the near term. While the outlook remains positive, elevated stock valuations suggest investors may need to stay selective.
Nitin Jain of Bonanza said Vladimir Putin’s visit could revive major defence collaboration between India and Russia, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic capabilities. Key talks are expected around advanced missile defence systems and fighter jets, including the possible acquisition of additional S-400 regiments to boost India’s air defence shield.
Additionally, a new S-400 proposal is expected to include a technology transfer component, allowing firms such as Bharat Dynamics Limited to participate in local assembly and key missile component production, strengthening indigenous capabilities. Russia’s Sukhoi-30 continues to dominate India’s fighter fleet, while the advanced Su-57 may feature in current discussions. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is expected to play a central role in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.
Further, Shravan Shetty of Primus Partners expects defence stocks like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited to benefit from rising co-production announcements. Siddharth Maurya of Vibhavangal Anukulakara added that joint manufacturing, technology transfer and long-term supply deals could further extend the multi-year rally in PSU defence stocks.
Investment in other Sectors
The areas that are under focus for trade and investments include pharma, agriculture, agro-products, fertilisers, engineering goods and IT sector. Among the traditional sectors of cooperation, two sectors will get impetus with this visit – civil nuclear energy and space. Russia could step up supporting small modular reactors in India.
Conclusion
Overall, the visit is shaping up as a major strategic trigger for India–Russia ties, with defence at the centre and multiple sectors in focus. While immediate stock reactions may stay volatile, meaningful announcements on co-production, technology transfer, and long-term supply agreements could strengthen India’s defence ecosystem and sustain the sector’s long-term momentum.
