India Launches AI Skilling for Media and Creative Sector

India is pushing to future-proof its creators as AI reshapes the content industry. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has launched a national AI skilling initiative on 23rd March in partnership with Google and YouTube, aiming to train 15,000 people across the media and creative sectors.

Announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the programme focuses on areas such as animation, VFX, gaming, comics (AVGC), and media technology. It helps creators and professionals adapt to rapidly evolving digital tools.

The initiative targets a wide group, including content creators, media professionals, students, and developers. It will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies. In addition, it also offers 15,000 scholarships to help participants build advanced AI skills.

The programme will run in two phases through 2026. The first phase, from 23rd March to 30th June, 2026, focuses on foundational learning through Google’s AI courses, such as AI Essentials and Generative AI. Completing this stage is mandatory to move ahead.

The second phase, from July to December 2026, will offer hands-on training tailored to the creative industry. This includes storytelling, platform best practices, and advanced tools such as Gemini, Veo, and Vertex AI.

The broader goal is to build a future-ready workforce and position India as a global hub for digital content and innovation. Furthermore, the aim is to strengthen the country’s growing ‘Orange Economy’.

Alongside this, the government also launched MyWAVES, a creator platform on the WAVES OTT platform. It introduced advanced electronic programme guides and built-in satellite tuners to improve access to DD Free Dish services.
