India’s Natural Gas Pipeline Network Crosses 25,000 Km; More Projects Planned

India’s natural gas pipeline network has crossed the 25,000-kilometre mark. This marks steady progress towards building a fully integrated national gas grid. According to a year-end release from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, cited by ANI, the country now has 25,429 km of operational pipelines. Additionally, another 10,459 km is currently under construction.

The expansion is aimed at improving energy security. It also encourages wider use of cleaner fuels across regions. To support this, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has rolled out the “One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff” system. This ensures uniform gas transportation charges across nearly 90% of the pipeline network. This initiative helps reduce regional price differences.

The government has also continued to prioritise access to clean cooking fuel. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, beneficiaries have reached around 10.35 crore as of 1st December, 2025. To clear pending applications and move closer to full coverage, approval has been given for 25 lakh additional LPG connections in FY 2025–26. Furthermore, there is a simplified eligibility process.

LPG affordability has been supported through a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for eligible households. This subsidy is increasing LPG usage. The ministry further highlighted progress in areas such as digital payments at fuel stations, safety inspections, and ethanol blending in petrol. They have also focused on the allocation of new oil and gas exploration blocks.
