Mahindra & Mahindra Acquires 26% Stake in Neon Hybren for Rs 11.17 Cr

Synopsis: Mahindra & Mahindra invested Rs 11.17 crore for a 26% stake in Neon Hybren to develop a solar plant in Punjab. This captive structure secures cheaper energy for its local factories, supporting its 2030 100% renewable goal.

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited announced a strategic energy investment on April 9, 2026, acquiring a 26% equity stake in Neon Hybren Private Limited for Rs 11.17 crore. A subsidiary of Mahindra Susten, Neon Hybren is currently developing a 30-45 MW grid-connected solar power plant in Bathinda, Punjab.

The project is slated for completion by December 31, 2026, and is designed to supply renewable power directly to M&M’s manufacturing facilities in the region. This acquisition aligns with the company’s broader initiative to decarbonize its industrial operations and scale its renewable energy footprint across India.

The 26% share by M&M is a strategic decision in accordance with the Electricity Rules, 2005, which gives a company a captive user status in the case of which it owns at least a quarter of the equity of a power plant. This categorization is crucial to industrial giants as they do not have to pay the Cross-Subsidy Surcharge (CSS) and other surcharges that are usually charged on open-access power.

M&M will be a step nearer to its ambitious sustainability targets by achieving this capacity. The firm is currently procuring 33% of its power through renewable sources and is planning to go 100%  renewable energy through its operations by 2030. Besides decarbonizing its production lines, this captive model would also offer long-term protection against the increasing tariffs in the grid.
