Mandrake Bio Raises Rs 16 Crore to Advance AI-Powered Gene Editing

Bengaluru-based biotech startup Mandrake Bio has raised Rs 16 crore in a pre-seed funding round co-led by Activate and Antler India.

The round also saw participation from Spectrum Impact, DeVC, and several prominent angel investors, including biotech veteran Vijay Chandru and entrepreneur Paras Chopra. The fresh capital will be used to accelerate the development of the company’s AI-powered gene-editing platform.

Mandrake Bio is leveraging generative artificial intelligence to design programmable gene-editing enzymes that could serve as alternatives to existing technologies such as CRISPR.

The startup aims to make gene editing more precise, efficient, and scalable for applications across healthcare, agriculture, and industrial biotechnology.

The funding will support expansion of the company’s research team, enhancement of its AI models, and faster product development. By combining advances in artificial intelligence with biotechnology, Mandrake Bio hopes to reduce the time and cost involved in discovering next-generation gene-editing tools.

The investment also reflects growing investor interest in the convergence of AI and life sciences, a sector that is attracting significant venture capital globally. As breakthroughs in machine learning continue to accelerate biological research, startups developing AI-driven solutions for drug discovery, genetic engineering, and precision medicine are gaining increasing attention.

With fresh funding and strong backing from leading early-stage investors, Mandrake Bio is well-positioned to contribute to the next generation of gene-editing technologies, potentially driving innovation across medicine, agriculture, and synthetic biology.
