Meta Set to Buy China-Based Manus to Scale AI Agents

Meta has taken another step in its AI push by announcing the acquisition of Manus, a Chinese-founded artificial intelligence startup, on Monday, 29th December. The move aims at scaling advanced autonomous AI agents across Meta’s consumer and business platforms.

Meta said Manus will help bring powerful AI agents to a global audience. It will create new opportunities for businesses using its products. According to the company, Manus has developed a highly capable general-purpose AI agent. This agent can independently handle complex tasks such as market research, coding, and data analysis.

Manus CEO Xiao Hong said joining Meta provides a stronger, more sustainable platform for growth. It allows the startup to continue operating independently. Manus will continue to sell its subscription-based service and remain headquartered in Singapore. Even as its technology is integrated into Meta’s ecosystem.

Founded earlier this year, Manus builds AI agents designed for research, automation, and complex workflows. The company claims its systems have processed over 147 trillion tokens, supporting more than 80 million virtual computers for users worldwide.

Meta said the deal will help expand Manus’ reach and embed its capabilities across products such as Meta AI. Manus’ engineering and research teams will also join Meta. The acquisition highlights Meta’s growing focus on agent-based AI systems capable of performing multi-step tasks with minimal human input. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
