Based on the 1-year returns data till , the Indian stock market is witnessing sharp divergence across sectors. The NIFTY PSU Bank leads with a stunning 27.7% return, while the NIFTY Media sector struggles with a significant 23.3% decline.
Top Five Performing Sectors
The NIFTY PSU Bank sector topped all indices with 27.77% returns YTD. Public sector banks benefited from improved asset quality and reduced non-performing assets. State Bank of India’s strong performance drove the sector higher. The government’s infrastructure push and steady credit growth supported PSU banks.
NIFTY Metal posted 21.63% gains year to date, securing second place. . Metal stocks outperformed most peers due to infrastructure spending and global demand. Hindustan Copper surged 36.8% while Hindalco advanced 35.49% year-to-date. Goldman Sachs highlighted copper’s tight supply and energy-transition demand as key factors.

NIFTY Pharma posted a marginal 2.82% decline despite India’s pharmaceutical growth. The sector touched a 52-week high of ₹23,604.45 before retreating. However, individual pharma companies like Neuland Laboratories grew 3.26% over the year. Mixed quarterly results and regulatory challenges impacted overall sector performance.
NIFTY Energy fell 1.11%, underperforming the broader market. primarily due to sustained weakness in major oil marketing companies like IOC, BPCL, and HPCL amid concerns over weakening diesel marketing margins and subdued industrial activity.
