OpenAI Acquires Torch to Unify Medical Data

OpenAI is diving deeper into healthcare with its latest move: acquiring Torch, a startup that brings together lab results, medications, and doctor visit recordings into a single platform.

The deal, reportedly worth nearly $60 million, is aimed at strengthening ChatGPT Health. This is OpenAI’s AI-powered tool that connects users to their medical records and wellness apps for personalised health guidance.

Torch, founded just a year ago, calls itself a “medical memory for AI.” Its app consolidates health data from hospitals, labs, wearables, and consumer health tests. This gives users a clearer, unified view of their health.

As part of the acquisition, Torch’s team — including CEO Ilya Abyzov and co-founders Eugene Huang, James Hamlin, and Ryan Oman — have joined OpenAI. “I can’t imagine a better next chapter than putting our technology in the hands of the hundreds of millions who use ChatGPT for health questions every week,” Abyzov wrote on X.

The acquisition comes shortly after the launch of ChatGPT Health last week. Integrating Torch’s technology is expected to make the AI tool even smarter at helping users manage their health.

Abyzov previously co-founded Forward, a tech-driven primary care startup that shut down in 2024.
