India’s power consumption rose nearly 7% to 138.39 billion units in December, up from 129.39 billion units a year ago, as colder weather boosted demand for heating appliances such as geysers and blowers, especially in North India.
Government data showed that peak power demand during the month increased to 241.20 GW. This was up from 224.23 GW in December last year. The all-time peak demand of about 250 GW was recorded in May 2024. Meanwhile, the highest demand during the recent summer was 242.77 GW in June.
Officials estimate that peak power demand could touch 277 GW in the summer of 2026. Experts said electricity demand rose in December as temperatures dropped. However, they expect consumption and demand to stabilize from January onwards despite further cooling.
The India Meteorological Department said cold wave conditions may develop in Delhi from 3rd January. The minimum temperatures are likely to fall below 5 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in the capital recently dropped to 14.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest this season. Meanwhile, the minimum stood at 6.4 degrees Celsius.
