Why Hindustan Copper jumped over 6% today? Check the reason

During Thursday’s trading session, the shares of a company engaged in various processes right from copper mining to the final stage of converting copper into saleable products surged 6.2 percent on NSE. Below is the likely reason behind the stock price surge on March 20th.

Price Movement

With a market capitalisation of Rs. 22,357.6 crores, the shares of Hindustan Copper Limited closed in the green at Rs. 222.89, up by nearly 3.7 percent, as against its previous closing price of Rs. 224.4. The stock has delivered negative returns of nearly 9 percent over a one-year period, while around 3.5 percent of positive returns in the last one month.

Reason for Share Price Increase

The main factor driving the rise in Hindustan Copper Limited’s shares was the surge in copper prices, which surpassed $10,000 per ton after weeks of global trade disruptions caused by President Donald Trump’s push for tariffs on the essential industrial metal.

On Thursday, copper on the London Metal Exchange reached a five-month high, rising by as much as 0.5 percent to $10,046.5 per ton, while prices on New York’s Comex also approached record levels.

Last month, President Donald Trump instructed the U.S. Commerce Department to investigate copper imports, a move seen as a precursor to imposing tariffs. Since then, U.S. copper prices surged as traders rushed to send as much metal to the U.S. as possible ahead of the potential tariffs, reducing global supply and driving prices higher elsewhere. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup predict that the U.S. will impose a 25 percent tariff on copper imports by the end of 2025, similar to the tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Similarly, its net profit decreased during the same period from Rs. 63 crores to Rs. 62.8 crores, indicating a marginal decline of around 0.3 percent YoY.
