Sudden heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh left over 1,000 vehicles stranded near the Atal Tunnel, disrupting traffic around Manali.
Snowfall began on Sunday evening in the Lahaul-Spiti district and continued into Monday. As a result, roads became slippery and there was near-zero visibility for tourists visiting spots like Sissu.
A massive traffic jam formed inside and around the tunnel. Some tourists were stranded for nearly 20 hours and forced to spend the night in their vehicles as over two feet of snow accumulated.
Police and the Border Roads Organisation launched a rescue operation. They safely guided around 700 vehicles back on Sunday and cleared the remaining by Monday as conditions improved.
Authorities shut the Manali–Atal Tunnel highway at Nehru Kund to prevent more vehicles from entering. Meanwhile, around 100 vehicles remained stuck near Dhundi during evacuation efforts.
Snowfall was also reported across several areas, including Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, and Kunzum Pass. Consequently, authorities advised against non-essential travel until conditions improve.
