Iran Shuts Airspace; Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet Issue Travel Advisory

Heightened geopolitical tensions have begun to ripple through air travel, prompting Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet to issue travel advisories after Iran shut its airspace amid rising strain with the US on Thursday, 15th January.

The airlines warned that flight rerouting due to the airspace closure could result in delays and, in some cases, cancellations. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status in advance or contact airline helplines. All three carriers also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected disruption.

In its advisory, Air India said the safety of passengers and crew remains its top priority. The airline confirmed that flights overflying the affected region are now operating via alternative routes. This change may lead to longer travel times. Additionally, some services where rerouting is not feasible have been cancelled. Passengers have also been asked to verify flight details on the airline’s website before heading to the airport.

According to reports, Air India cancelled at least three US-bound flights. These include two services from New Delhi to New York and Newark, and one from Mumbai to New York. Certain Europe-bound flights are also expected to face delays.

IndiGo issued a similar advisory, stating that several international flights have been affected by the sudden airspace closure. The airline said its teams are actively assessing the situation and supporting affected customers. This support includes offering flexible rebooking options or refunds. Additionally, IndiGo added that the disruption is beyond its control. The airline assured passengers that updates will be shared as the situation evolves.

SpiceJet also alerted passengers through a post on X, noting that some of its flights may be affected by the closure of Iranian airspace. The airline advised travellers to check their flight status online or contact its 24/7 reservation helpline for assistance.

Iran has extended its order, closing the country’s airspace to commercial aircraft without providing an official explanation. At the same time, tensions with the US continue to remain elevated, according to reports.
