Synopsis: Jain Irrigation has commissioned one of the world’s largest single-unit biochar reactors in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Processing 20,000 tonnes of agri-waste annually, the facility aims to enhance soil fertility and generate verified carbon removal credits.
Shares of Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd, with a market capitalization of Rs. 2,303.90 crore, were trading at Rs. 32.24, up 10.71% from their previous close of Rs. 29.12. The stock touched an intraday high of Rs. 33.09 and a low of Rs. 29.62, with a traded volume of 215.91 lakh shares and traded value of Rs. 69.95 crore. It remains nearly 51% below its 52-week high of Rs. 66.45.
In a major step toward sustainable agriculture and carbon removal, Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. has commissioned a large-scale biochar production facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. The company informed stock exchanges on June 3, 2026, that the plant has an annual processing capacity of nearly 20,000 tonnes of agricultural and fruit-processing residue, making it one of the largest single-unit biochar reactors in the world.
The facility is capable of processing more than 50 tonnes of agricultural waste every day through pyrolysis, a process that heats biomass in a low-oxygen environment. Instead of allowing crop residue to be openly burned, the plant converts it into biochar, a carbon-rich material that can improve soil quality and lock away carbon for long periods. The Jalgaon unit is the first in a series of planned biochar projects, with additional reactors already under development.
The project addresses a significant environmental challenge in India, where more than 500 million tonnes of crop residue are generated annually. Open burning remains one of the most common disposal methods, contributing to severe air pollution and seasonal smog episodes. By converting agricultural waste into a valuable soil amendment, the facility offers a practical solution that can help reduce emissions while improving farm productivity.
Biochar is increasingly gaining attention for its agricultural and environmental benefits. It enhances soil fertility, improves water retention, and can reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. At the same time, it serves as a durable carbon removal solution, as the carbon stored in biochar can remain locked away for hundreds of years.
A key advantage for Jain Irrigation is its extensive farmer network and distribution infrastructure. With operations spanning irrigation systems, agri-processing, renewable energy, and farming solutions across more than 120 countries, the company has an established channel to bring biochar directly back to farms. This integrated ecosystem could accelerate the adoption of biochar among farmers while strengthening the company’s position in the emerging carbon-removal economy.
The carbon removal credits generated from the facility will be verified through Puro.earth, a globally recognized carbon removal registry. As demand for high-quality carbon removal credits grows among corporations worldwide, the project could create an additional long-term revenue stream for the company beyond its traditional agriculture businesses.
Commenting on the development, Managing Director Anil Jain said the initiative is aimed at reimagining the agricultural value chain by transforming farm residue into a valuable resource. According to him, the project creates a circular system that benefits farmers while delivering environmental and economic value to multiple stakeholders.
Company Overview
Founded over four decades ago, Jain Irrigation is one of the world’s largest micro-irrigation companies, generating annual revenues of around USD 750 million. The company operates manufacturing facilities across 22 locations globally, employs more than 9,000 people, and has worked with over 10 million farmers worldwide. With the commissioning of the Jalgaon biochar plant, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of sustainable agriculture, waste management, and the rapidly expanding global carbon-removal market.
