Jet Fuel Up 105%; Airlines Seek Relief on Airport Charges

Airlines are facing a sudden cost shock—and it’s hitting fast. Global jet fuel prices have more than doubled in just four weeks. Prices rose from $95.9 per barrel on 20th February to $197 per barrel on 20th March—a spike of nearly 105%.

This sharp jump, driven by the ongoing tensions in West Asia, is putting heavy pressure on airline finances. As a result, there are higher operating costs, possible fare hikes, and risks to passenger demand.

To ease the burden, airlines have approached the government seeking relief on taxes and airport charges, especially landing and parking fees. However, with many major airports run by private operators, any meaningful reduction in charges may be difficult.

The pressure could intensify further in India. State-run oil companies are expected to raise aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices in April, after holding back a major hike in March despite rising global rates. Fuel already accounts for nearly 40% of airline operating costs.

At the same time, airlines are dealing with operational disruptions. Airspace restrictions in parts of West Asia have led to flight cancellations and longer routes. These restrictions are also increasing fuel usage and crew costs.

This creates a double hit—rising expenses and disrupted operations. While airlines may increase ticket prices to protect margins, there are concerns that higher fares could hurt demand. This is especially true in price-sensitive markets like India.

With no quick resolution to the conflict, airlines are preparing for a challenging period ahead. At the same time, they are hoping for some policy support to ease the pressure.
