LPG Crunch Forces Offices, Hostels to Cut Canteen Menus

A shortage of commercial LPG cylinders across India has forced many offices to scale back their canteen menus amid the conflict in West Asia. Several workplaces are shifting to simpler meals. These meals require less cooking gas.

Canteens at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Mumbai, offices of Infosys in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune, and the Delhi High Court are offering fewer food choices. Moreover, many kitchens are limiting menus to cold items such as sandwiches that require little or no gas.

Infosys informed employees that live food counters will be temporarily withdrawn. Because of this change, items like dosas and omelettes will be unavailable starting 12th March, according to reports.

The BMC office in Mumbai has also removed items like cutlets and vadas from its menu due to limited LPG supply. Staff said only enough gas was available to prepare lunch on 12th March. Therefore, some kitchens are using induction cookers to prepare items like idlis.

Other IT firms, including Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant, and Wipro, have also reduced canteen options. These companies have asked employees to bring their own meals. At the International Tech Park Bangalore campus in Whitefield, canteens offer limited food options, such as lemon rice and sandwiches.

The LPG supply crunch has also affected hostels and paying guest accommodations. Operators say many facilities have only a few days of gas left if consumption is carefully managed.

Rising LPG shortages have also pushed up demand for electric cooking appliances. Rajendra Gandhi, Managing Director of Stovekraft, said the company has seen a fourfold increase in weekly sales of induction cooktops under its Pigeon brand. Furthermore, the company plans to increase production at its Harohalli, Karnataka, manufacturing facility.

Reports also said people in several cities have been rushing to petrol stations to stock up on fuel as concerns over supply disruptions grow.
