Rather than abandoning its longtime cloud partner, AI startup Perplexity is widening its cloud strategy.
Perplexity has signed a $750 million, three-year deal with Microsoft to use Azure’s cloud services. This allows it to deploy AI models through Microsoft’s Foundry platform. This includes access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI, according to people familiar with the agreement.
The company clarified that the deal does not replace its relationship with Amazon Web Services. AWS remains Perplexity’s primary cloud provider, and the startup plans to expand that partnership further in the coming weeks.
Perplexity has historically relied on AWS, using Amazon’s Bedrock service to power its AI search engine with Anthropic models. Its CEO, Aravind Srinivas, has previously described the company as “all-in” on Amazon’s cloud. The commitments total hundreds of millions of dollars.
The move reflects a broader trend among AI companies to work with multiple cloud providers. With this, they access a wider range of models and reduce dependence on a single vendor. This approach has accelerated as AI workloads grow more complex and infrastructure-intensive.
The Microsoft deal strengthens Azure’s push to become a hub for building and deploying AI applications using models from several providers. Microsoft has already integrated models from OpenAI and Anthropic into Foundry. Additionally, it says customer adoption of multi-model workloads is rising rapidly.
Perplexity, meanwhile, continues to compete with major players such as Google and OpenAI in reshaping how people search for information online. At the same time, it navigates legal tensions with Amazon over AI-powered shopping features.
