Why Did Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta Stocks Rally 6% Today?

Synopsis: Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta shares rose after the government raised import duty on gold and silver from 6% to 15%. The move is expected to boost domestic silver prices and improve margins for producers.

Markets witnessed a sharp rally in metal-related stocks after a significant policy move by the government. The decision to increase import duties on precious metals has altered the pricing dynamics in the domestic market.

The higher duties are expected to make imports costlier, thereby improving competitiveness for local producers. This development is also anticipated to enhance revenue visibility and margins for companies linked to silver production and metal extraction.

Stocks movement

With a market capitalisation of Rs. 2,83,772 cr, the shares of Hindustan Zinc Ltd were trading at Rs. 671.60 per share, jumping 6% in today’s market session, making a high of Rs. 677.10, up from its previous close of Rs. 641.55 per share.

With a market capitalisation of Rs. 1,24,448 cr, the shares of Vedanta Ltd were trading at Rs. 318.05 per share, increasing 4.5% in today’s market session, making a high of Rs. 318.45, up from its previous close of Rs. 305 per share.

What’s the News

Shares of Hindustan Zinc (HZL) and its parent company Vedanta Ltd saw a significant jump following the Indian government’s decision to hike import duties on silver and gold. The duty on these precious metals was increased from 6% to 15%, a move aimed at curbing rising imports triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis and a need to manage the national import bill.

The duty hike is particularly beneficial for Hindustan Zinc because it is one of India’s largest silver producers. By-products of its zinc and lead mining operations make silver a high-margin business for the company. When import duties rise, imported silver becomes more expensive, allowing domestic producers like HZL to sell their silver at higher prices in the local market. This pricing power typically leads to improved revenue and stronger profit margins for the company.

As the majority stakeholder in Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta Ltd stands to benefit indirectly through improved consolidated earnings and potentially higher dividend income. This is crucial for Vedanta, as analysts note the company relies on dividends from its subsidiaries to manage its relatively high debt levels.

However, experts caution that the long-term positive impact could be offset if higher domestic prices lead to a sharp decline in industrial demand or if global silver prices face a downward trend due to international economic factors.

Hindustan Zinc Ltd is one of India’s largest producers of zinc and a major global player in integrated mining and metal operations. The company is also a significant producer of silver as a by-product of its zinc and lead mining, making it sensitive to changes in global and domestic precious metal prices.

Vedanta Ltd is a diversified natural resources company with interests in metals, mining, oil & gas, and power. It operates through multiple subsidiaries, including Hindustan Zinc, and derives a substantial portion of its value from commodities such as zinc, aluminium, oil, and silver, making it closely linked to global commodity price movements.
