Emcure Gains as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy Gets MASH Nod

Emcure Pharmaceuticals shares hit a day high of Rs 1,814 on the NSE on 17 July 2026 after Wegovy won CDSCO approval for fatty liver disease.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation approved Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy as the first and only GLP-1 therapy in India for adults with a serious form of fatty liver disease called MASH.

Until now, Wegovy was approved in India only for weight management. This new approval means doctors can now prescribe it for a much wider set of patients.

MASH develops when fat builds up in the liver and causes inflammation and damage. If it is not treated, it can turn into more serious liver disease.

Novo Nordisk said close to two in three people in India are estimated to have some form of fatty liver disease, which points to a large number of patients who could benefit from this drug going forward.

This approval matters directly for Emcure. The company has an exclusive partnership with Novo Nordisk to distribute semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, in India under the brand name Poviztra.

With the fatty liver approval now in place, Emcure’s opportunity with this drug widens well beyond just weight loss treatment. Emcure has also been building on this partnership in other ways.

Earlier this year, the company cut the starting monthly price of Poviztra to Rs 3,999, sharply lower than its earlier price, as competition in India’s obesity and metabolic treatment space has picked up.

On the financial side, Emcure closed FY26 with consolidated revenue of Rs 9,204 crore, up 16.6% from the year before. Operating margins also improved during the year.

The stock gave up some of its early gains as the session progressed. Emcure Pharmaceuticals shares closed at Rs 1,783.90 on the NSE, down 1.04% from the previous close of Rs 1,802.70.
