Germany Labour Shortage: Indian Talent in Demand

Germany is running short of workers—and it’s now looking beyond its borders to fix that.

With fewer young people entering traditional trades and a large section of the population nearing retirement, businesses are struggling to find replacements. As a result, this gap has pushed employers to explore hiring from countries like India. There, a younger workforce is ready to step in.

What started as a small experiment has quickly grown. In 2022, just 13 Indian trainees arrived in Germany for vocational roles. Today, that number has expanded, with around 200 Indians working in butcher shops alone. Additionally, many more are entering fields like baking, mechanics, construction, and stone work.

For Indian workers, the move is largely driven by practical reasons—better wages, more stable job opportunities, and the ability to support families back home. At the same time, Germany has made it easier through policy changes and increased work visa quotas. In addition, Germany has signed migration agreements to smooth the process.

The bigger picture is hard to ignore. With an ageing population and low birth rates, Germany needs nearly 288,000 foreign workers every year to keep its workforce stable. Furthermore, going by current trends, Indian workers are set to play a much larger role in filling that gap.
