Japan Sees Record February Tourism Despite China Visitor Drop

Even as Chinese tourist numbers declined sharply, Japan recorded its highest-ever February tourism figures, highlighting strong demand from other regions.

Total visitors rose 6.4% YoY to 3.46 million in February, setting a new monthly record, according to official data.

Arrivals from China fell 45% to 396,400, impacted by ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The Lunar New Year, falling in February this year (vs late January last year), helped boost travel demand.

The Kawazu Sakura Festival saw a noticeable drop in Chinese tourists but still attracted around 630,000 visitors, its highest since 2022.

South Korea remained the top source of tourists, with arrivals rising 28% to 1.08 million.

Visitors from Taiwan also surged 37% to 693,600, supporting overall growth despite the China slowdown.
