What sounds like science fiction could soon become real, as a startup works on delivering “sunlight on demand” after sunset.
Reflect Orbital is developing satellites that can beam sunlight from space to Earth at night. The price is about $5,000 (Rs 4.6 lakh) per hour.
The system uses large mirrors in orbit to capture sunlight and reflect it onto specific locations once it gets dark.
The company has applied to the Federal Communications Commission for approval to test its first satellite.
The prototype will carry a 60-foot mirror and operate about 400 miles above Earth. It will move along the day-night boundary (terminator line).
Each satellite can illuminate an area about three miles wide. However, this lasts only for about four minutes per pass due to its high orbital speed.
Users can request light via an app by selecting a location. Also, annual contracts require at least 1,000 hours of usage.
