What Happened
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited has confirmed that it is in discussions with FIFA to acquire the broadcasting and streaming rights for the 2026 World Cup in India. This development comes at a time when negotiations between FIFA and a Reliance-Disney joint venture have reportedly stalled ahead of the tournament scheduled to begin on June 11.
FIFA is said to be seeking around $60 to 100 million for India’s broadcast rights covering the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. This is significantly higher than the approximately $20 million offer made by the Reliance-Disney joint venture. Meanwhile, Sony, which had also explored the opportunity earlier, has decided not to participate in the bidding process.
Zee stated that these discussions are aligned with its broader strategy to expand its sports broadcasting footprint. The company is preparing to launch “Unite8 Sports,” a dedicated sports channel portfolio aimed at strengthening its presence in the sports media segment and scaling its content offerings in live sporting events.
