IBM to Set Up One of India’s First Quantum Computers in Amaravati

IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna has confirmed that Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, will host one of the first two IBM quantum computers to be installed in India, with the system expected to become operational by September 2026.

The announcement strengthens the state’s vision of transforming Amaravati into a leading hub for quantum technology and innovation. Speaking at an event in the United States, Krishna highlighted the rapid progress in quantum computing and said the technology is approaching a stage where it can deliver meaningful commercial value.

He noted that quantum systems could begin generating major advantages within the next few years across industries such as pharmaceuticals, materials science, financial services, logistics, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

The development represents a major milestone for Quantum Valley, Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh’s flagship initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive quantum ecosystem. The project seeks to bring together government agencies, academic institutions, technology companies, researchers, and startups to accelerate innovation and develop practical applications in quantum science.

The upcoming IBM quantum computer will provide advanced computational resources to researchers, businesses, and emerging startups, enabling them to experiment with complex problems that traditional computers cannot efficiently solve. The facility is also expected to support talent development and encourage deeper collaboration between industry and educational institutions.

In recent regulatory and public updates over the past six months, Andhra Pradesh has continued to emphasize its commitment to attracting high-technology investments and building digital infrastructure in Amaravati. The state government has actively promoted Quantum Valley as a strategic initiative to position the region as a national center for next-generation technologies.

With IBM’s planned investment and technological support, Amaravati is poised to play a significant role in shaping India’s growing quantum computing landscape and fostering innovation across multiple sectors.
