As global power dynamics shift, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the United States of using “unfair methods” to restrict Russia’s trade. He argued that the US does so in an effort to preserve its economic dominance.
In an interview with TV BRICS, Lavrov said the world is moving toward a “multipolar” order. It is moving beyond both Cold War-era bipolarity and the brief “unipolar moment” that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. He pointed to the rise of China, India, and Brazil. Furthermore, he also pointed to growing economic influence across Africa, as signs that Western control is weakening.
Lavrov argued that the US, once the primary driver of global finance through the dollar, is now “objectively losing its economic influence.” He claimed that successive US administrations have used sanctions and trade restrictions to suppress competitors. In addition, citing bans on Russian oil companies such as Lukoil and Rosneft, he said Washington has tried to control Russia’s trade, investments, and military-technical ties. He added that partners, including India and other BRICS nations, have also faced pressure.
He described this as part of a broader attempt to protect a Western-led financial system built around dollar-based trade. He also said it was built around institutions shaped by the West.
On security matters, Lavrov said Russia’s foreign policy is focused on national survival and border security. He reiterated Moscow’s stance that Western actions escalated tensions in Ukraine. Furthermore, he referred to sanctions, maritime restrictions, and limits on energy trade as a “global economic war” against Russia.
Highlighting BRICS, Lavrov said cooperation within the bloc is expanding. This includes efforts to develop alternative payment systems and increase settlements in national currencies. He also mentioned the creation of new investment and reinsurance mechanisms.
In addition, he added that India’s 2026 BRICS chairmanship priorities — such as counter-terrorism, energy security, and technology cooperation — align with Russia’s approach to practical, development-focused partnerships.
