Tamil Nadu strengthened its position as an auto manufacturing hub on Monday as Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated Tata Motors’ new passenger vehicle and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) facility at Panapakkam in Ranipet district. The greenfield plant, located inside the SIPCOT industrial complex, has formally begun operations.
The facility will assemble completely knocked-down (CKD) units for JLR models and add capacity for Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles. The first model to roll out is the locally assembled Range Rover Evoque. The plant will also support JLR’s existing CKD operations at Tata Motors’ Chakan facility near Pune.
During its Q3 FY26 earnings interaction, Tata Motors said capacity constraints at Chakan and limited room for expansion prompted the activation of the Tamil Nadu site. The company plans to gradually scale production over the next five to seven years. As a result, this will allow the site to reach an annual capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles. This includes production for both domestic and export markets.
Tata Motors is expected to invest around Rs 9,000 crore in the project. The facility, spread across 470 acres within the SIPCOT complex, is part of a larger 1,200-acre land parcel acquired by the company. The project is likely to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. Additionally, it will strengthen the regional supplier ecosystem.
Company officials said the plant is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and to be water-positive, in line with global sustainability standards. Its proximity to Tamil Nadu’s ports will support exports. Moreover, this includes exports of electric vehicles.
While Jaguar brand production is being phased down globally ahead of its reinvention, Land Rover models continue to see demand in India. For now, JLR vehicles will be assembled through the CKD route. There is no immediate shift to full local manufacturing.
