As cross-strait dynamics heat up, Taiwan’s opposition is making a key diplomatic move ahead of a major US-China engagement.
Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT), will visit China in April after accepting an invitation from Xi Jinping.
The visit will take place from 7th April to 12th April, covering Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu province.
This comes just weeks before Donald Trump is expected to travel to China for a summit in May.
Cheng, elected KMT chairwoman in October, has signalled a push for closer ties with Beijing than her predecessor, Eric Chu.
China continues to avoid talks with Taiwan’s current government, led by Lai Ching-te, but maintains engagement with KMT leaders.
Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party has urged Cheng to assert that Taiwan is a sovereign and independently governed country during her visit.
The development comes as Taiwan debates a proposed $40 billion defence spending plan, with the KMT seeking more clarity before approval.
The backdrop remains sensitive, with China viewing Taiwan as its territory, even as both sides have operated separately since the Chinese Civil War.
